When there is lingering pain or a joint ache, your first thought is probably to take a pain reliever, get some rest, and try some ice or heat. But if the pain continues despite these easy at-home remedies or if it is a reoccurring pain, it might be time to consider physiotherapy. You should also consider physiotherapy when you experience reduced mobility, stiffness, faulty posture, swollen joints, difficulty performing your daily tasks or exercises, etc.

The time frame for your initial assessment and follow up visits will depend on the nature of your condition, the type of physiotherapy care you are receiving and what is recommended in your treatment plan. Typically sessions are anywhere between 30 minutes to 1 hour. Your physiotherapist will tell you how long your sessions should be booked for. Charges for extended sessions are different and your physiotherapist will discuss them with you in advance.

If you insurance plan covers physiotherapy, your in-home physiotherapy sessions will also be covered by insurance plan. Plexus physiotherapy is an approved provider for direct billing for a growing list of insurance providers. Green Shield, Empire-Life, Canada life, Sunlife, Manulife, Desjardins, Blue-cross are just to name a few. We can assist you to inquire and see if your insurance plan approves direct online billing for you. If your insurance plan allows direct billing, we will happily submit the claims on your behalf. You will only be responsible for the unpaid balance.

If you are being treated for injuries sustained in a car accident and your claim has been approved we do not require payment directly from you. After your initial assessment, we will submit the appropriate proposed treatment plan to your auto insurance company and upon approval of the plan; we can bill your insurance company directly.

Many patients do pay out-of-pocket for therapy. Physiotherapy fees paid directly by a patient are tax-free and qualify as a medical expense for income tax purposes.

We do not use support personnel to administer your care. We provide only the therapy you need, and we will empower you to supplement your in-person care with a self-managed home care programme.

Our goal will be to help you feel better as quickly as possible. A satisfied patient will refer their friends and family.

Virtual physiotherapy

Virtual physiotherapy, or tele-rehabilitation, involves using video calls to provide physiotherapy services remotely. Whether you have barriers that make it difficult to leave your home or simply prefer the convenience of care on your terms, you can connect with our experienced physiotherapists for a 1-on-1 session from anywhere in Ontario.

This type of physiotherapy upholds the same safety, effectiveness, and ethical standards of care as in-person visits. The physiotherapist and the patient will adjust the assessment process and treatment plans to ensure that quality care is still being delivered. During virtual sessions, there is no hands-on treatment and devices and modalities will not be used.

This list includes but is not limited to a range of different kinds of physiotherapy that can be provided remotely using technology:

  • Initial assessment (complete history including pain questionnaires and physical evaluation such as examination of range of motion and functional movement and strength) and ongoing assessments to monitor progress.

  • Exercise prescription with supporting photos/videos

  • Home-based modalities, including electrical stimulation and heat and cold applications.

  • Self-administered techniques such as soft tissue massage and mobilization under the direction of the physiotherapist

  • Education on injury/condition, self-management and prevention, coaching for patients and for caregivers. This includes teaching patient’s families how to assist in performing stretches or guide home exercises.

  • Assessment of how patients are functioning and adapting in their home environments.

Physiotherapists and patients partner in the care plan and collaboratively set goals. Progress during virtual visits will be tracked based on the patient-centred goals, using patient report outcome measures.

Physiotherapy is more than one type of treatment, and the depth of our skills and expertise are not limited to our hands. Our physiotherapists’ ability to help you achieve your goals come from vast experience, endless hours of university education, specialized courses and mentorship, and thousands of clinical cases over the years.

Yes! At this time, we are unaware of any extended health insurer that does not cover virtual physiotherapy as a part of their usual physiotherapy benefits. We have no reports of any claims being denied. However, you may wish to contact your insurance company to confirm your coverage details.

Virtual sessions can be provided on almost any device with camera, and an internet connection. So you can use your laptop, smart-phone, tablet or computer with a web-camera for your appointment.

You will connect with your physiotherapist through video-conferencing. A secure link, with clear instructions on how to easily login to the session will be sent to your email. You can open this link in any of the supported web-browsers including Chrome, Firefox, or Safari.
